Bea Cunningham, Director of Family Ministry
It’s First Communion Season! A whole generation of young people are in the process of being welcomed to the Table for the very first time. Here at Old St. Patrick’s, our students from Frances Xavier Warde School, the Partners Religious Education Program, and the Jewish/Catholic Family School have joined a community of Eucharistic people when they celebrated their First Communion ceremonies yesterday.
On their First Communion Day, our children have taken the next step in deepening their relationship with the Lord begun at their Baptism. As they now have come to the Table, they share more intimately in the faith of our community and continue to discover what it means to live a life of love like Jesus.
Preparation for First Communion here at Old St. Pat’s is a very thorough and energizing experience. One of the special features is our Bread Board activity. The Bread Board is an 18 x 24 inch poster board with a beautiful photo of multiple loaves of bread and the caption which reads “I Am the Bread of Life.” On that board, families are to focus on the First Communicant and how that child “gives life to” or “feeds” their family, friends, and community. It’s a great activity for all of us to reflect on how we “give life to” one another.
Some of the Bread Boards mentioned times when the child “give life” to one another – so many times when they didn’t even realize they were doing it – an earnest, unsolicited “I love you, Mom…” a call to Grandpa just to say hi… working on a puzzle with the youngest sibling when you’d rather be out with friends… a pickup basketball game which includes the whole group…a visit to Feed My Starving Children to help strangers…
We are all called to be Eucharistic people – giving thanks and praise for God’s gifts. After we receive the gift of Eucharist, it is meant to be shared – to “give life to” or “feed” others. It is our way to show our gratitude to God.
The final words of the Mass are “Go in peace to love and serve the Lord.” We thank God in appreciation and then are meant to bring Christ to others, to be Eucharist to others, to be the hands and feet of Jesus….
Jesus calls each of us to live lives of love and to be Eucharist to others in our own unique way. We’ve been Finding God in Family Ministry this year. It’s our way of recognizing the Good in every person and in every situation. When we try to be Eucharist and live out our First Communion, we’re Finding God in ourselves and sharing that with all we meet. Our hope is that these children will be the expression of God’s love to the word and that each day, they will feel as close to Jesus as they did on their First Communion Day.
Our First Communicants, and all those who support and inspire us by “giving life” help us to Find God – what could be more “Eucharistic?”
We thank you for the gift of your presence to these little ones and their families. Your friendship, love and care through the years has nourished them, providing a glimpse of Christ’s infinite love and affection. Without your support, witness and encouragement, they would not be among us joining us at the Table of the Lord.
Congratulations to the Old St. Patrick’s First Communicants from Frances Xavier Warde School, the Partners Religious Education Program, and the Jewish/Catholic Family School
