Friends of Fabretto
Early on the morning after our arrival in the remote village of Cusmapa,
I ventured out for a walk behind our cozy little eight-bunk quarters.
I went to see the lumber mill where I met Don Pedro, an older Nicaraguan
man. He began to talk rapidly to me in Spanish, and I told him that
I only spoke and understood a little Spanish. He smiled, then with
great patience, he gave me a tour of the lumber mill. Despite the
language barrier, we were able to communicate just fine. He showed
me a fenced area filled with the pine saplings we would be planting
later that morning… This was his mill, his work and his territory.
He was so proud to tell me all about the lumber mill and the surrounding
area.
Founded by Italian missionary priest Fr. Rafael Maria Fabretto in 1953,
La Familia Padre Fabretto currently serves 5,200 of the poorest children
in the second poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. The projects
will provide direct service to La Familia by staffing building projects,
conservation efforts, and children’s recreation outreach activities
in the mountain villages of Somoto and Cusmapa.
