The Encore Café Welcomes Dan McGrath!
Sunday, February 26, 2017
Dan McGrath has undergone an interesting career transition from big-city journalist to inner-city educator. A Chicago native and a product of Leo High School on the South Side, McGrath has enjoyed a long career in journalism. He spent the 25 years traversing the country, working for in newspapers in six cities, including Sacramento, San Francisco, Philadelphia and New York. In 1996 he returned to Chicago to take over as sports editor of the Chicago Tribune, a position he would hold for 13 years.
He left the Tribune after its sale in 2009 and was invited to serve as the President of Leo High School. Mr. McGrath has succeeded in stabilizing enrollment, improving school finances and raising Leo’s public profile. With support from a remarkably generous alumni network and talented, dedicated faculty and staff, Leo stands as an oasis of learning and a beacon of hope at 79th and Sangamon, proudly serving the Auburn-Gresham community many residents, businesses and even churches chose to abandon over the years.
We welcome Mr. McGrath and look forward to his insights into the value and necessity of quality education in inner-city neighborhoods, Catholic education in particular. Leo draws
the majority of its student population from underserved communities, but Mr. McGrath believes the values it imparts and the safe, nurturing learning environment it provides are the keys to Leo’s success.
