For the last 31 years, a child from Upper Austria has lit two blast proof miner’s lamps from the Grotto of the Nativity, town of Bethlehem, city of Jerusalem.
The light is carried in two blast proof miners lamps on an Austrian Airlines jet from Tel Aviv Israel to Vienna, Austria from where it is distributed at a Service of Dedication to delegations from across Europe who take it back, with a message of Peace, to their own countries.
This week, Austrian Airlines flew the miners lamps containing the Peace Light from Bethlehem to JFK in New York City. Since 9/11, the Roman Catholic diocese of Brooklyn has spread the light upon arrival and it quickly moves across the country by local scouts. By Christmas, the Light reaches nearly every country in Europe and across the United States.
We invite you to come and light your own lantern or candle from this flame brought from the Grotto of the Nativity in Bethlehem. There will be a transfer of the flame and a short prayer service at Old St. Patrick’s on December 3 after the 11:15 am. Mass.
It is a great idea to bring an enclosed lantern or candle to light for your advent and your Christmas Eve dinner. For over a thousand years lamps have been continuously lit in the Grotto of the Nativity in Bethlehem.
