Volunteer
Local Outreach
The Community Outreach Group invites men and women to participate by sharing their time and talent with those in need. Outreach is made up of more than twelve different volunteer social service organizations serving young and old throughout the Chicago area. From tutoring a child in basic math and reading skills, befriending a homeless person, to teaching literacy to persons of all ages, volunteers touch the lives of others and enrich their own lives through their experiences. Volunteers come from all walks of life and sometimes are part of a group of co-workers who desire to contribute to team involvement.

Pastoral Care Ministry
Companions on the Journey
In order to answer the question, “What would Jesus do?” it is probably advisable to ask the question, “What did Jesus do?” Clearly there are a mirad of possible answers to this question, but for our purposes, one of the most simple answers is that Jesus accompanied and was elegantly present to people who were in need, hurt or alone. It is in this spirit that the Pastoral Care committee of Old St. Patrick's invites you to consider joining us in our efforts to “Do what Jesus did”—be a companion to one another on the journey!
Specifically we are looking for people interested in:
Liturgical Ministers
As a liturgical minister at Old St. Pat's you will be asked to participate in an orientation and training session as well as periodic on-going formation sessions. Time commitment and scheduling is flexible and can accommodate your availability on a monthly basis.
Committed people are needed as:
- Ministers of the Word (Lectors) who proclaim the first and second readings and/or the prayers of the faithful.
- Extra-Ordinary Ministers (Eucharistic Ministers) who distribute communion.
- Hospitality Ministers who welcome the members and friends of Old St. Patrick's, distribute worship aids and bulletins, orchestrate the gift bearers and collection; and attend to special circumstances/needs of those in attendance.
Please consider a commitment to our liturgical ministry. With our liturgies and services enriched by the gifts of many diverse ministers and ministries we are able to worship more prayerfully together and share this experience with the larger Church.
To become a liturgical minster, please contact Sandy Downes at Sandyd@oldstpats.org or 312.798.2385.
Horizons for Youth
Horizons for Youth's mission is to create opportunities for and build relationships with children from low-income families so that they can conceive of and achieve their dreams. To accomplish this mission, we focus on providing students with a quality education and a circle of support, beginning as early as kindergarten and following them through the eighth grade. Our multi-faceted program provides tuition scholarships, one-on-one mentors and monthly child enrichment activities for low-income elementary school children throughout Chicago.
Special Events
The Special Event Department was formed to support the greater overall mission of Old St. Patrick's Church through hospitality and to encourage a sense of community, celebration, friendship and spirituality among the friends of Old St. Patrick's and the community of Chicago. The Special Events Department creates and expands event opportunities that serve the needs of diverse audiences, while generating significant funding to support operational and capital costs.
If you are interested in volunteering for one of our annual special events, please contact Sheila Greifhahn at SheilaG@oldstpats.org or 312.798.2343.
