Online Resources

During this time of COVID-19, people and communities like ours are trying to courageously practice physical distancing for the common good. And at the same time, we are called to fight the effects of anxiety and isolation that increase when so much of our experience and understanding is being turned upside down.

Perhaps during this extraordinary moment, we might commit ourselves to finding creative ways to make holy communion a verb. Let us strive to do communion with our neighbors through phone calls, video-chats, letter-writing, social media messages ... the things that will remind others that they - and we - are not alone.  True kinship is revealed in moments like these, when instead of closing in on ourselves, we strive to carry these burdens alongside our neighbors in solidarity and hope. Below are some opportunities for online faith sharing and ways to stay engaged and connected with our community.

Virtual Music Collaborations

Bring Me To Light

Faced with uncertainty and separation, Nick Cosgrove and Mark Scozzafave teamed up virtually to offer a musical gift to the Old St. Pat's Community. From the lyrics, "a voice keeps saying this is where I'm meant to be...I'll be right where I belong...I will search the world...face its harms...till I find welcome waiting in your arms".
Listen to "Go the Distance" on YouTube

In the absence of our schola group leading 8 pm mass, Mark is also excited to share this arrangement and virtual collaborative effort to record Be Still. Despite being asked to stay home, the days still bring a frenetic pace of conference calls, just-in-time planning for projects, meals, liturgies, etc., and ever-changing expectations from colleagues. We can also ask ourselves to Be Still, and know...

Pray Online

Getting Started in Zoom

Picture
During this time of social distancing, participating in a small faith community online is a helpful resource to stay connected and enhance your prayer life. You can learn all about it at contemplativecommunity.org.

Chapels are hosted by trained leaders Monday – Saturday of each week. There is no fee and you can participate when you are able. We connect together in our online chapel through the video conferencing platform, Zoom. In order to participate in any of the online chapels, you will need to register by going to contemplativecommunity.org and completing a simple registration form. Once you have registered, an email will be sent to you with the URL and all the info you will need for participating in any of the chapels throughout the week.

The chapel experience is less than one hour long and takes place in two parts. The first half of our time is spent together in silent prayer/meditation. To see, hear and join with others throughout our community can be a profoundly connecting, expansive and intimate experience. The second half of the chapel time is reserved for reflecting on a short reading and then some simple faith sharing. If you have questions, please contact Al Gustafson at [email protected]

Chapel Schedule:

Mondays at 7 am Host: John Blumberg & Julia Pryce
Tuesdays at 7 am Host: Ed Shurna & Ellen Wiggins
Wednesdays at Noon Host: Al Gustafson
Wednesdays at 8 pm Host: Marci Madaly & Ed Siderewicz

Thursdays 8 am Host: Marybeth Coleman & Eileen O’Shea

Fridays 10 am Host: Al Gustafson
Saturdays 7 am Host: Kate DeVries & Ellen Wiggins

In the coming weeks, we are hoping to utilize online communications tools, like Zoom, to stay connected with our community. We encourage you to use this resource to check in with friends and loved ones. Zoom is a great, free tool, to video and audio conference with others. See below for information on how to set up Zoom.

1. Download Zoom on your device.
For Phone
  • Go to App Store (Apple) or Google Play (Android).
  • Search for Zoom Cloud Meetings and install.
From Desktop
  • Go to www.zoom.us/download
  • Click on Zoom Client For Meetings to download.
  • Be sure to choose YES when asked about allowing the app to make changes to your device.
  • To utilize the video option (for others to see your face) your device must have a webcam.
2. Click on the meeting link you wish to attend.  The meeting isn’t opened until close to the scheduled starting time.  If you miss the starting time, you will be joined while the meeting is already in session (and that’s okay). Often times, a meeting host will send you a link to a specific meeting. Once you have the Zoom program downloaded on your phone or computer, click the link at or just before the specific meeting time, should allow you to join the meeting with ease.

Troubleshooting Zoom
  • If you are having problems, contact your Meeting host, utilize tutorials on Zoom.us, or request a free demo on the Zoom homepage.
  • If you don’t want to be seen on video, there is an option to turn off your video.  You will still be able to see and hear everyone else.
  • Be patient with yourself the first time. Ask for help if you need it.

Loving Kindness Meditation | Mondays at 7:30 pm
Join us in the OSP online chapel on Monday evenings for a guided Loving Kindness meditation practice beginning every Monday at 7:30 pm. This meditation has its roots in the Buddhist tradition and is a practice for cultivating Christ like compassion for ourselves, those in our life and our sisters and brothers throughout the world. It can serve very practically as a necessary and skillful antidote to the negative states of mind that it is nearly impossible to guard against during these days of the pandemic.

This will also be an opportunity to join our hearts as one, sharing our prayer of care and becoming a collective channel of Light to a world that can use a little more love.

To sign up and receive a Zoom link to access the chapels, visit bit.ly/contemplativecommunity
