Condolences for Fr. Tom

To the community of Old St. Pat's,

It is with great sadness that we report that Father Hurley lost his father, Dr. John Hurley, yesterday. Dr. Hurley was lovingly ushered home to God surrounded by his children and grandchildren. As a community, we mourn the loss of this incredible man who served his patients for 60 dedicated years at the Little Company of Mary Hospital. The Hurley family is grateful for your love and support in these hours. Losing someone you love is never easy however in this isolated time of COVID19 the family is navigating their grief and asking you to join them in prayer by sheltering your families and staying safe in these days and hours.

We invite you to support the Hurley family by sending your thoughts and condolences from the Old Saint Pat's community on this page rather than by phone and email so the family can care for one another in these grief-filled days. May God continue to comfort each of our families in these challenging days.

I worked w/Dr Hurley at LCMH for almost 25 years, he and my parents were great friends (Ken Fitzgerald). I loved his sense of humor, his humility, his kindness, compassion, love for his patients. There aren't enough words to express how great a man/doctor/friend he was. My thoughts and prayers are with your entire family.

Dear Tommy and Hurley family,
I was so sorry to read about your Dad's death. He was certainly a legendary and iconic figure in our community - and of course your family.
Many will say he lived a good long life, so don't be sad, but I have always thought the longer we have our parents, the harder it is to lose them. They were part of your everyday, especially your Sunday dinners.
We are all saddened by your loss and celebrate your wonderful memories.

Fr. Tom,
My deepest sympathies. My mother past away last year from dementia and I so much loved your stories you would share about your dad and mom. They were the exact same stories we lived with my mom. Somehow listening to you tell those stories gave me great comfort. While we have not met face to face, you may have seen the lady sitting in the 15th row crying. That was me and they were tears of joy because I got to spend a little more time with my mom through your messages. May you find the same comfort in the upcoming days and months.

You shared the anecdote about growing up in the southside as a kid and your father correcting your behavior. As a new parent, I appreciate these anecdotes and how you are able to connect lessons from your father to what we should learn through the Word. May your father's legacy continue to live through your work and then through our community. My condolences.

He clearly leaves quite a legacy through his work, his children, his faith, family and community. May we all work to leave the world a better place than we found it, like he did. Peace and blessings.

I am so sorry for your deep loss. You and your family have experienced personal loss before, of course, and will again as we all do, but each loss is it's own time of pain, has it's own set of circumstances and shadows. A funeral now has outside restrictions perhaps making it even more difficult. But know that while hundreds are not physically at your side consoling you all - probably thousands are praying for you all. Your words time and time again have helped us. Your father gave us his son and his son...you...are a legacy to a wonderful family.

Fr. Hurley,

I'm very sorry to hear of your Dad’s death. I remember first meeting your father in my grandparents living room. My grandparents lived in Evergreen Park, in the shadow of Little Company of Mary and your father regularly visited and looked after them. It meant a lot for me to see him a few years ago at the seminary and thank your dad for the tenderness with which he cared for my grandparents. Please be assured of my prayers for you and your family.

To the Hurley Family
Dr. Hurley was a fabulous human being. He
Did so much for me and my family. I am 74 now and I started going to him when I was 13. He took care of my parents and delivered my 4 children. I will always be grateful for his kindness to me and my family.
When I had my first baby I was in the hospital for 10 days because I couldn’t urinate. Instead of medicine, he had a 6 pack of beer sent to my room-problem solved! One time he told me when I get off the elevator for the Natural Family planning meeting turn left instead of right. When I asked why, he said that’s where the Weight Watcher meeting was. His way of telling me to lose weight.
One of my favorites was his retirement letter asking his patients to make an exit appointment. He read me my weight from all my appointments since age 13.
I could go on and on but it was an honor to be a patient of Dr. Hurley❤️

I worked at LCM and would meet up with John at the Doctor Dinners. I always looked forward to his comments about the good old days at the hospital, you never knew what to expect. It was nice seeing him at the holiday Masses at St. Cajetan. A great guy who will be missed.

To Father Hurley
Whenever I learn that someone dear to a person I know has died, I always check to see if it was on a special feast day. The fact that, for your father, it was on the feast of St. Joseph seemed most fitting. Through your homilies you have given many of us a glimpse of the type of father he was -- surely a role model worthy of sharing St. Joseph's feast day. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I hope that you will be comforted by many fond memories of your father in the days ahead.

When all the prayers were said, the music played, the meal eaten, the hands shaken and arms embraced, I visited my father's grave before returning home to Chicago. Flowers covered his grave on the barren spring soil and my knees buckled to the ground. How will I continue in this world without my father's will and confidence in me? In that portal of sorrow I realized Our Father's will for us is to arise and continue, we don't walk alone♥️ In your own time, OSP is here when you're ready, because "Damn it: you're the Grand Marshall"🍀

Dear Tom and all the Hurley family,
Please accept our shared sorrow on the loss of your wonderful husband and dad. We are so grateful to you for sharing him with the community of Old St. Pat's on special holidays but, more especially, through the wonderful, inspiring stories Tom told Those tales made us laugh. And they made us cry. But always evident in them were Dr. Hurley's love of family and faith and his amazing vocation as a doctor. We pray for strength for you at this time as you mourn. We are certain Dr. Hurley is resting in eternal peace. We pray that some of that peace comes to rest in your hearts as his spirit and love find an eternal home there as well.

I, like all who knew him, have always carried the highest respect for Dr Hurley. His heart of love for all was incredible and anyone who knew him was witness and was recipient to his genuine love. His graciousness and compassion raised the bar for us all. And also memorable was his beautiful and low keyed sense of humor. His love for his family was always evident. I first met him when I was 16 or 17 years old. On Saturdays I was sometimes assigned to work the Doctor's Lounge, and that's where we first met. I was at LCM for 28 yrs. (His son Fr Hurley and my nephew Eric looked like they could be brothers when each was in their late twenties early thirties). I have no doubt of what a glorious joyful reunion awaited him as he reunited with his daughter and son and all his dear ones. Thank you for letting me know. All are in my prayers. Thank you Dr Hurley and family.

Follow Thomas, as we all know and all agree you are a fabulous priest teaching the message of Jesus and bringing people together as one family. Treat people the way you want to be treated. But we all know that the best of us in the worst of us come from somebody. Yes we all come from God but we also come from a mommy and a daddy who really help shape our lives and help us become who we become. For better or for worse. Your father serving the people in the south side of Chicago as a doctor no doubt helped create you into who you are. So we look up to heaven and thank you daddy for making you a person who helps us all as we struggle through life giving us hope and belief that someday we will join your father with the Almighty father in a happy place we call heaven. Thank you. Arthur

Dearest Fr. Hurley,

We did not have the good fortune to know your father personally but we knew him through you and we are forever blessed. Each time you have shared a story, an experience, a reflection, a memory of your dad and your family we have been blessed and enriched. We stand with you and your family during this time of deep sadness as you mourn the loss of your beloved dad. God bless you, Father Hurley.

Love, light and peace~

Dear Fr. Tom,
We’re so sorry about your dad’s death.
There’s no good time to lose your dad or mom.
You have spoken about your family so often
from the altar that we feel we kind of knew him.
What a wonderful man he was, and what a role
model for you of Christian manhood & fatherhood.
His example of goodness certainly rubbed off on you,
& you are sharing it with all of us.

God Bless You, & keep you healthy at this very sad
time for you, your family, & our world.

Mary Kay & Ed Joyce

Oh, Father Hurley, Little did we know when you led the St Patricks Parade Procession around Old Saint Pat's altar as the Grand Marshall you were not only sad about the cancellation of the day's events but you were probably overwhelmed with concern about your father days before his death on St Joseph's Day. Please accept our sincere condolences. It is so difficult to lose a parent, especially when he is still your nuclear family. It sounds as though he was a "grand" person himself, explaining a lot about who you are and the spiritual healing you were born to do! God bless you and your family and may your father rest in peace. He will.
